A dead little fish
On Friday, September 18, I noticed that a Diamond Neon Tetra was lying still on the bottom of the aquarium. He was gasping for air and had bulging eyes (Popeye). I also saw that the little fish had a swollen belly.
He was being chased by the Corydoras fishes. And suddenly, he started having convulsions. I caught him out of the aquarium and put him in a bucket with a shallow layer of aquarium water.
My husband and I searched the internet for a way to help the little animal. When we realized what was wrong, the fish was lying dead in the bucket.
We are really upset about this. We try to take the best possible care of our animals. But there is still so much we don’t know.

And at the time of writing, it is Saturday, September 19. We have discovered three other diamond neon tetras with swollen bellies.
We separated them and went to the pet store with photos of the fish. They think the fish have dropsy.
The three of them are now in a quarantine tank, with an air stone for oxygen and a small plant.
My husband put the sick fish in the quarantine tank and attached the air stone to the tubing. The tubing is now connected to the same air pump as the one in our aquarium.
I have taped shut two sides with black felt on the outside so that they have a sheltered corner.
We gave them 2 drops of eSHa2000. Tomorrow and the day after tomorrow they will get 1 drop. And then their illness should be over.
I am terribly disappointed about this. We had just got everything in order after the bacterial and algal bloom. Yesterday we measured our water parameters.
NH4 (Ammonium/Ammonia) <0.05 mg/l
NO2 (Nitrite) <0.01 mg/l
NO3 (Nitrate) 1 mg/l
I don’t think they could get much better.
Every week I give them HS aqua Fishguard and HS aqua Vivocell.
At the time of writing, we have had our aquarium for 99 days, and something is wrong every month. But I don’t want to give up hope yet.
A sad update on Sunday, September 20
Unfortunately, we had to euthanize the three fish with clove oil.
I fear we have Neon Tetra disease.
